In simultaneous translation communication occurs uninterruptedly. The interpreters listen to the speaker and immediately translate for the audience that listens through wireless audio receivers. It is a clear and precise stream of communication. An interpreter can translate simultaneously for up to an hour on his/her own. For longer events, in order to ensure the quality of the translation, it is necessary to hire two interpreters who take turns translating every half hour. When one interpreter translates, the other assists by doing research about terminology.
Simultaneous translation of conferences
The simultaneous translation of conferences is the most common type of simultaneous translation used in congresses, large international meetings, seminars, forums and conferences. In simultaneous translation the interpreters work from inside a simultaneous translation booth. The advantages of using a translation booth are:
• Sound proofing – ensures greater sound clarity for the interpreters and clearer sound transmitted to the headphones of the audience.
• Quality and versatility in large events – with the full array of equipment it is possible to provide translation for a large audience. Several simultaneous translation booths can be assembled in the same room depending on the number of languages used at the conference.
Simultaneous translation with portable equipment
Simultaneous translation can also be carried out using portable equipment. The use of portable simultaneous translation equipment is recommended for liaison or group translations in factories, farms, industrial facilities and in closed environments for meetings and presentations with up to 20 participants. In this case, the interpreter accompanies the group and translates using a portable transmitter with a microphone while the meeting participants listen to the translation through electronic audio receivers. São Paulo Intérpretes can provide portable equipment for simultaneous translation.
Consecutive translation is the oldest form of oral translation.
In this type of translation no sound equipment is required. While a person speaks in one language the translator takes notes. When the speaker pauses the interpreter summarizes what was said. This is how speaker and translator alternate to convey the information.
Consecutive translation can be used in press conferences and in highly confidential situations such as visits from Heads of State.
Liaison or group translation is a type of translation in which the interpreter accompanies an executive or delegation on foreign visits or business meetings, domestically or abroad. It can be done with portable simultaneous translation equipment or without equipment, using intermittent (whispering) or consecutive translation.
São Paulo Intérpretes also provides services for Focus Groups, a type of opinion survey conducted by moderators in which consumers are brought together to voice their opinions about a product or service. The client monitors the meeting outside the conference room, viewing the participants through a one-way glass window while the interpreter translates what is being discussed.
São Paulo Intérpretes provides written translation services for a variety of texts, including documents that require sworn or certified translation. Written translation services include the following types of texts:
